Its aim is the global topographic mapping of the Earth's surface. The data willbe acquired by the first space-born single-pass Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometer. Within eleven days this mission will map all continents between +/-60 degree latitude. The resulting data set is unique in two respects. Firstly, the height accuracy of about 6 m of the obtained Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and secondly the hugeamount of data which have to be processed are remarkable. The global DEM generation requires a highly optimized, with respect to height accuracy and throughput, as well as an operationally working interferometric processing system. DLR's GENEric System for Interferometric SAR (GENESIS) was adapted to meet the mission requirements. This paper presents the architecture and algorithms of the implemented InSAR Processor. The simulation of SRTM data is described and the expected SRTM-DEM characteristics are compared with ERS-1/2 data. Basic Principles and Current Issues of Sar Interferometry

The principles of SAR interferometry, in particular phase unwrapping and geocoding, are described. Interferometric point positioning is treated based on a least squares approach avoiding approximations. Current issues of SAR interferometry are discussed: atmospheric effects on spaceborne repeat-pass interferometry limiting the accuracy and reliability of Digital Elevation Models (DEM), the Shut...

Metrology, attitude, and orbit determination for spaceborne interferometric synthetic aperture radar

The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), scheduled for an 11 day Space Shuttle flight in 1999, will use an Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (IFSAR) instrument to produce a near-global digital elevation map of the earth’s land surface with 16 m absolute vertical height accuracy at 30 meter postings. SRTM will achieve the required interferometric baseline by extending a receive-only r...

Water slope and discharge in the Amazon River estimated using the shuttle radar topography mission digital elevation model

[1] We find that the standard deviation, hence error, of the water surface elevation data from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) is 5.51 m for basin-wide, regional and local Amazon mainstem reaches. This error implies a minimum reach length of 733km in order to calculate a reliable water-surface slope. Resulting slopes are 1.92 ± 0.19 cm/km for Manacapuru, 2.86 ± 0.24 cm/km for Itapeu...

Srtm and Beyond: Current Situation and New Developments in Spaceborne Insar

SAR interferometry (InSAR) has become one of the most powerful tools in radar remote sensing. Generation of digital elevation models, measurement of glacier flows and mapping of earthquakes, volcanoes and subsidence are the most prominent applications of InSAR. For most of these applications continuous acquisition of SAR data from space over many years, like with the ERS-1/2 or Radarsat, is ind...
